Scotland player ratings for Switzerland

The Manchester United player breathed life into Scotland’s Euro campaign, but Ralston’s error allowed Switzerland to equalise

Scotland’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 remained alive as they drew 1-1 with Switzerland on Wednesday night, with Scott McTominay’s opening goal cancelled out by Xherdan Shaqiri’s winner.

After being beaten 5-1 by Germany in their opening group match, Scotland needed a strong start and they got it, with McTominay’s first-time shot finding the leg of Fabian Schar, who tapped the ball into his own net in the 13th minute.

Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 in their opening match of the tournament, but they had another chance to equalise 13 minutes later when Anthony Ralston sent a back pass and Shaqiri fired into the top corner from 20 yards.

Grant Hanley’s shot was deflected off the post just after the hour mark and Swiss substitute Zeki Amdouni’s late header went inches wide, but the night was decided. The result means Cheap Scotland Jerseys must beat Hungary in their final group game to have any chance of qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams to advance to the last 16, with Switzerland currently tipped to advance in second place.

Scotland player ratings for Switzerland

Goalkeeping and Defending
Angus Gunn (6/10):

He could do nothing about Shaqiri’s goal but was lucky to have Dan N’Doye’s goal ruled out for offside as he was too slow to react to a ball bouncing in the box. He made a brilliant save from N’Doye in the second half but doesn’t look the most reliable of goalkeepers.

Anthony Ralston (2/10):

Inexplicably played a no-look back pass to the keeper and Shaqiri reacted quickest to fire a stunning shot into the top corner. Was poor against Custom German Jerseys and this game was no different. Arguably should have been brought on as a substitute against Hungary.

Jack Hendry (5/10):

Looks like a well-rounded, capable player at times but was sloppy in possession and his positioning was questionable at times. Needs more substance to his style.

Grant Hanley (6/10):

Coming in for the suspended Ryan Porteous, the Norwich City man produced a couple of fine defensive headers in the first half despite his limited ability. His header hit the post and nearly put his side ahead.

Kieran Tierney (6/10):

Unlike the German game, he linked up well with teammate Andrew Robertson. Some of his back passes were poor and unfortunately, he was out of action early with an injury in the 60th minute.

Andrew Robertson (7/10):

The Liverpool hero made several excellent finishes down the left and played a key role in Scotland’s opening goal.

Midfield
Billy Gilmour (6/10):

Come on for Ryan Christie to try and give them more control in midfield but his passes were a bit sloppy and inaccurate.

Callum McGregor (7/10):

The Celtic star provided the pass for McTominay’s early goal, controlling possession well and finishing well.

Scott McTominay (8/10):

He headed in two early goals to put his side ahead. He was one of the few players in the Scotland team who performed well against Germany, and as such, he was Scotland’s biggest threat against Switzerland.

John McGinn (6/10):

Aston Villa’s ace was busier and more active than in the Germany game, as he used his physicality more effectively – but his performance was not at the level he usually has for his club.

Attack
Che Adams (5/10):

He failed to control the ball in attack for much of the first half and fouled opponents clumsily, but he had one or two good moments – but he still needs to do more.
